Speech Therapist doing paperwork

Where do I begin if I'm concerned about my child's speech development?

First, you can refer to the Practice Areas page for reference on milestones by age expectancies. Then, you can reach out to your primary doctor and ask for a hearing and vision test. The reason being to rule out any hearing or vision concerns that may impact their ability to hear and see the way we communicate. Lastly, reach out to a Speech-Language Pathologist to have an assessment conducted.

Do you collaborate and/or work as part of a team?

I believe working as a team is crucial for the best treatment for my clients. As a team, that includes the individual, the caregiver/parents, and any other professionals they are receiving intervention from (e.g., occupational therapists, doctors, teachers, etc). I offer collaboration through email or phone, as well as co-treatment sessions if the professional and I feel it is best for that specific individual. Additionally, I offer my support in IEP meetings or meetings alike to give insight into what I feel professionally is best for the individual.

How long will my child need speech therapy?

Every child is different depending on age, diagnosis, goals, and treatment. We will set short and long term goals based on the needs of the child and review progress as we progress through speech therapy sessions. There is no "one size fits all" with speech therapy.

Do you provide social group sessions?

Yes, but this all depends on how many students will participate in the group. Social skills are a huge part of development and learning with peers is crucial. I have had great success working with social groups in the school setting, and am so excited to incorporate this through my business.

Does speaking 2 languages cause a speech delay in children?

Research shows that learning 2 languages does NOT cause a speech delay. In fact, I highly recommend individuals to learn multiple languages especially if the individual's family speaks another language.

Do I attend the speech session with my child?

This all depends on the setting, age and goal(s) of the individual. If they are of a younger age and I am in your home setting, I will recommend you attend the session. However, if your child does better without their parent(s) present, I would have the parent(s) step out of the room and have them come back at the end of the session so I can give insight into what we worked on that session. Also, if the session is over teletherapy, the parent(s) would only need to be present if the child has difficulty maintaining to the screen or session. Behaviors can impact the ability for students to perform during speech therapy sessions. Therefore, as a parent, you may help your child decrease these behaviors by providing reminders, sensory input, small breaks, etc. This is also something we can discuss further as we dive into speech therapy sessions. I want to make sure I provide the best intervention for each of my clients, and I will tailor appropriately to each individual.
